Addiscombe on film

A very rare screening of the 1961 Tony Hancock movie, The Rebel, will be available to watch on Talking Pictures TV (Freeview 81) at 7.20pm this Thurs 4th June.

The opening sequence (a brilliant little piece of comic timing involving two trains going in different directions, stopping at a suburban station) was filmed at what was then Bingham Halt, just south of Addiscombe Tram Stop as now is but up on the then embankment ready to cross the railway bridge over Bingham Road.  Taking all of one Friday morning for a five minute piece of film, the cast and crew decamped to the Black Horse for a very long and liquid lunch.

If you’re unable to watch it, take a look at the scene by scene breakdown with images of Bingham Station here.
